There is apparently a limit to how much attention Joey the Golden Retriever is willing to share. The pup is seen enjoying affection from his mom when she instead pets the dog beside him. Joey’s response is subtle but remarkably well-timed as his wagging tail suddenly goes still. The moment has made for a funny video that gives a whole new meaning to letting your body language do the talking.
Golden Retriever stops wagging his tail when mom pets the companion beside him
A video shared on Instagram by @joey_how_u_doinnn shows Golden Retriever Joey lounging in bed with his owner and another pup. What begins as a cozy moment quickly turns into what looks like a silent competition for his mom’s attention.
In the clip, Joey’s owner pets the two dogs one at a time, switching between them. Whenever she pets Joey, his tail wags happily as he enjoys the attention. But the moment her hand moves over to the dog beside him, Joey’s tail stops wagging.
The timing becomes even funnier when his owner switches back to Joey. Almost immediately, his tail starts wagging again. Then, when she returns her attention to the other dog, his tail appears to respond in much the same way.
The result is an amusing back-and-forth, with the pups seemingly taking turns showing their approval, or lack thereof, as their owner moves from one to the other. Their tails almost appear to be keeping score of who is getting the attention at any given moment.
Meanwhile, text added to the video sums up the moment perfectly: “Happy when Mom pets you, not happy when Mom pets your competitor – the tails give it away.” While it is impossible to know whether Joey is genuinely feeling jealous, his perfectly timed reaction makes the interpretation hard to resist.
