While the goal is always to help a pet find a permanent family, that doesn’t make the final goodbye any easier. One foster mom recently shared that bittersweet reality after documenting the emotional moment she sent a shelter dog off to her happy ending.

The video, posted by the Instagram account @packardspack, documents Mocha’s final moments in her foster home after news arrived that she had been adopted. Before finding her permanent family, Mocha had entered foster care through the Orange County Humane Society. It gave her the chance to experience life outside the shelter while waiting for the right match.
Instead of spending every day behind kennel bars, Mocha was welcomed into a home where she could settle into a routine, receive one-on-one attention, and enjoy the comforts many shelter dogs miss. Over time, she also formed a close bond with the woman who had opened her home to her.
That connection is evident throughout the video. As Mocha prepares to leave, her foster mom gently pets her, kisses her on the head, and lingers over their final moments together. Although the adoption is clearly a reason to celebrate, the goodbye is filled with emotion. Text displayed on the screen reads, “Worth every tear… every goodbye… for them.”
The video’s caption addresses one of the most common reasons people hesitate to foster. “What we hear: ‘I could never foster, I get too attached.’ And yeah… that part is true,” the caption begins. It goes on to explain that foster dogs naturally become part of the family. They curl up on the couch, earn countless nicknames, and become woven into everyday life. Because of that, foster families “cry every single time they leave.”
Still, the message stresses that those tears are part of something much bigger. Every adoption means another dog has escaped the shelter environment and started a new life with a permanent family. It also creates space for another homeless animal to receive the same opportunity.
Encouraging others to consider fostering, the caption adds, “With that said FOSTER!!” The update ends with the news viewers had been hoping for: “Miss Mocha got adopted!!! Happy for our girl!!”
