Winston the Corgi looks like a perfectly normal little guy, right up until his owner brings out the ball. In a hilarious video from @corgiwinstontje on Instagram, Winston sits calmly in a sunlit room with his ears up and expression neutral, like nothing out of the ordinary is happening.

Then his owner raises a ball into the air, and Winston’s entire face changes. His eyes track the ball upward, and suddenly, he is staring with such intensity as if trying to move the object telepathically.

The on-screen text quips, “Corgis when the ball comes out.” And for a moment, the Corgi looks so serious when his owner holds up the ball that he barely seems to blink. As the caption under the video says, he is “locked in.”

While Winston holds the stare, his owner squeezes the ball, and the honking snaps the Corgi out of his trance in the most hilarious way. A moment later, the owner tosses the ball, and Winston takes off to fetch, as if the intense stare was just part of his pre-game exercise.

Dogs do this because toys can become a strong cue — basically a signal that something exciting is about to happen. Over time, the sight of the ball alone can turn up anticipation, and you can almost see Winston’s brain switching into “must-pay-attention” function, which is typical of herding breeds like Corgis.

The comments section loved the theatrics of it all. One viewer echoed what might have gone on inside Winston’s brain, writing, “Throw it. Do it now. Throoooowwww it!!!,” while another declared, “Ball is life.” A third viewer shared, “The squeak from the ball got my corgis attention,” — proof that Winston is not alone.

The pup may look like he is having an existential crisis, but really, he is just doing what a Corgi does best — get extremely serious about fun, even if it is just his owner holding up a ball.
