When a puppy moves into the house, the older dog has to figure out a few things pretty fast, including who is allowed to touch the toys. Ruby seems to have decided that Pearl needs a sharp reminder after the puppy wanders off with one of her favorites.
In the video shared by @annabranch, the Golden Retriever walks straight over to Pearl, who is tucked under a dining-room chair with the stolen toy. Ruby gives her a warning, checks the room, and then comes up with a solution that leaves Mom laughing.

The video starts after the toy theft has already happened. Pearl is sitting underneath a dining-room chair with Ruby’s toy, while the older dog walks over with her tail wagging. Ruby stops in front of her little sister and gives her a look that seems to say the toy situation needs to be addressed. She stamps one paw on the floor, then turns toward mom, who is filming the whole exchange. Pearl keeps watching Ruby.
Ruby, meanwhile, does a full 360-degree spin. Then she looks at Pearl again and then at Mom. And with the most innocent expression imaginable, Ruby slowly lowers herself onto the puppy. It is a very deliberate sit. However, Ruby does not put her full weight on Pearl, and she moves slowly enough that the puppy is not hurt.
Still, Pearl ends up squished underneath Ruby for a moment, which appears to make the point Ruby wanted to make. Pearl starts wriggling around, trying to get back out. Ruby turns to check on her, and once the puppy gets a little too squirmy, Ruby gets back up. That’s when Ruby grabs her toy in her mouth and takes off.
So, yes, the puppy steals the Golden Retriever’s toy, but the Golden Retriever gets the toy back from her. Mission accomplished! The clip has earned more than 40,000 likes, and viewers were fascinated by just how intentional Ruby’s little maneuver appeared.
One commenter wrote, “Looking back, to ensure she was sitting directly on the puppy was diabolical.” Another called it “premeditated butt squash.” Yet another viewer called her a “passive-aggressive golden,” which may be the most accurate description of the entire situation.
