Bringing a newborn home can change the routine for everyone in a family, including the pets who suddenly have a new little person to get used to. Some dogs become curious about every sound, smell, and movement. While others seem determined to stay close and keep an eye on the baby. That appears to be the case for Tommy, a Blue Staffy whose latest month as a big brother involved plenty of “sniffing and supervising,” as can be seen in this video.

Dog brings out his ‘nanny dog’ while supervising newborn baby sibling

A video shared by @tommybluestaff captures several moments from a dog’s second month as a big brother to his new baby sister. The montage features the Blue Staffy alongside his human sibling, with text at the beginning reading, “Month #2 of Tommy being the best big brother.”

Much of Tommy’s time around the baby appears to involve one particular activity: sniffing. His family explained in the caption that there was “a LOT of sniffing” as Tommy continued getting to know his new little sister. They even joked that his interest in sniffing sometimes gave them a clue that the baby’s nappy needed changing.

But Tommy was doing more than simply investigating the new arrival. His owners said they began noticing his “nanny dog” tendencies coming out as he took on what they described as “supervising duties.”

Meanwhile, the video shows just how much the dog enjoys being around the baby. Tommy repeatedly positions himself close to the baby, watching her and checking in as she goes about her routine. His presence has seemingly become a regular part of her everyday moments.

However, Tommy’s second month as a big brother was not without a small downside for him. Family members visiting the home turned their attention toward the newest member, leaving Tommy with less of his usual spotlight.

Still, they made sure he continued receiving plenty of affection and attention of his own. While the baby may now take up much of the family’s time, Tommy still has an important place in the household.
