Not every animal starts off trusting, especially those who have been moved from one home to another. Rebuilding confidence takes patience, and sometimes the smallest signs of progress matter the most. Over time, those small steps can lead to meaningful change. A recently shared video highlights this process through one rescue dog’s gradual return to comfort and affection with belly rubs and cuddles.

Rescue dog who nearly gave up on life gets second chance after being used for breeding

A video shared on Instagram by @justgunnerstunner documents the journey of Hera, an American Bully who had spent years being used for breeding. According to the clip, Hera was listed online for £100 ($135). It was a friend of her now-owner who first came across the listing and shared it, prompting them to meet Hera in person.

Their first impression was troubling. Hera appeared withdrawn, hesitant, and unwilling to engage. She avoided touch and showed little response to affection, as though she had shut down emotionally. The rescuer later shared that Hera was approaching six years old and had already lived in multiple homes. Over the course of her life, she had given birth to eight litters, a history that likely contributed to her physical and emotional state.

When Hera arrived at her new home, the adjustment wasn’t easy. She refused to eat at first, leading her owner to gently hand-feed her to build trust. Interaction was kept slow and calm, and she was gradually introduced to other dogs in the household to avoid overwhelming her.

After about a week, Hera started to respond differently. She began seeking out attention on her own terms, approaching her owner and allowing herself to be touched. Soon after, she displayed a major shift when she started rolling over and exposing her belly.

By the second week, her confidence had grown further. Hera was seen playing with toys and interacting more comfortably with other dogs. She also began to enjoy going outside, showing excitement whenever she spotted her leash.

In the caption, her owner reflects on the unexpected bond, saying Hera arrived at the “perfect time” and reminded them of the love they still had to give. What Hera needed most was peace, and slowly but surely, she’s found it.
