There’s no shortage of creative ways to engage pets, from puzzle toys to food-based challenges that test their instincts. While these activities are designed to be enriching, they don’t always go smoothly on the first try. Sometimes, the learning curve becomes part of the fun. That’s precisely what unfolds in a video showing a rescue dog’s first attempt at bobbing for food.

Mike Brown, the owner of a popular rescue dog named Cactus, recently posted a video of the pair experimenting with a food-based activity. The idea was to place treats and berries in a bowl of water and have Cactus “bob” for them.

In the video shared on @cactustherescue, Brown sets up the bowl and demonstrates the technique himself, dipping his face toward the water to show Cactus how it’s done. While the demonstration is clear, Cactus seems more confused than curious. Instead of reaching for the floating snacks, he approaches the bowl cautiously and begins drinking the water.

Despite Brown’s repeated attempts to guide him, Cactus doesn’t quite understand the objective. He circles the bowl, pauses, and looks on, as if unsure what is expected. The moment becomes more amusing as Brown continues encouraging him, only for Cactus to remain unconvinced. Eventually, the owner gives up on the experiment, reaches into the bowl to retrieve the soggy treats, and feeds them to Cactus by hand. Wrapping up the attempt, Brown jokingly says, “Well, that didn’t go according to plan, mister.”

In the caption, Brown explained that it was Cactus’s first time trying this activity. He added that he had seen other dogs enjoy it and found it rewarding, which motivated him to give it a try.

Interactive feeding techniques like this can be enriching, as they encourage problem-solving and tap into a dog’s natural foraging instincts. However, it’s important to start simple. If you’re considering trying this with your own dog, begin with shallow water and easily reachable treats so they can quickly understand the goal. Demonstration alone may not be enough. Gentle guidance and patience go a long way. Like any new activity, the key is to keep it positive and stress-free, ensuring your pet enjoys the process rather than becoming frustrated.
