Traveling with pets has become increasingly common, with many owners choosing to bring their furry companions along for trips rather than leave them behind. As a result, many airlines have slowly adapted to this trend. However, larger dogs still present unique challenges when it comes to comfort and space. For big breeds especially, fitting into standard travel arrangements isn’t always simple. A recent video of a Golden Retriever navigating air travel in his own way has caught attention online, showing just how different the experience can be for oversized pets.

Video shows Golden Retriever has two flight seats because he’s too big for one

The video, shared on Instagram by @merlotthegoldie, features a large Golden Retriever named Merlot navigating his space on an airplane. According to his owner, his size made it necessary to purchase two seats just for him. The on-screen text humorously reads, “POV: You’re so big that you had to buy two seats.”

At the start of the clip, Merlot appears slightly unsure of his surroundings. He tries to settle in but initially struggles to find a comfortable position. Sitting with his hind legs on the seat while his front legs rest on the aircraft floor, he looks momentarily confused, as if still figuring out how to manage the unusual setup.

As the video continues, Merlot adjusts his stance. He briefly stands across both seats, testing the space before slowly lowering himself down again. Eventually, he finds a position that works by stretching out across the two seats and settling in more confidently. By the end of the clip, Merlot appears relaxed and at ease, having successfully claimed his space. His owner captioned the video, “Big problems for big ones.”

If you are planning to travel with your dog on a flight, start by checking the airline’s pet policy well in advance. That’s because rules can vary significantly depending on the carrier and the size of your dog. Smaller pets are often allowed in carriers under the seat, but larger dogs may require purchasing additional space or traveling in designated areas.

It’s also important to make your dog comfortable with travel before the journey. Bringing along a familiar blanket or toy can help reduce anxiety. Make sure your pet has had enough exercise before boarding, and avoid feeding them right before the flight to prevent discomfort. During the journey, keep an eye on their behavior and ensure they remain calm and secure.
