Introducing a rescue pup to a new family member can go a hundred different ways, which is why this heartwarming Instagram video from @cactustherescue has struck such a chord with viewers. The video features Cactus, the titular rescue pup, meeting his owner’s sister for the first time. Once he meets her, he acts like he has known her his whole life — and it does not take much for her to receive hugs, kisses, and cuddles from Cactus.

The video shows the rescue pup inviting the new family member into his world almost immediately. It opens with the on-screen text, “Introducing dog to my sister for the first time ever,” as Cactus listens to his owner gently warn him, “You’re about to meet your aunt for the first time, okay? You better be nice.”

He did more than being “nice.” The second Cactus’s aunt comes close, he lets her wrap him up in a hug and even goes in for kisses. In the video, the rescue pup rolls over for belly rubs like this is part of the normal routine with his aunt, except he had never met this family member before. Later, he even climbs into bed to wake her up before lying down beside her for a cuddle.

In the caption, the owner explained, “Cactus met my sister for the first time. She’s the first immediate family member of mine he’s met,” adding, “My family’s in Pittsburgh and I haven’t been able to fly with him yet, so this meant a lot.” He added, “I was hoping it would go well and it couldn’t have gone better. They clicked instantly.”

Dogs take their cues from the person they trust most. Hence, if their owner greets someone with warmth, it might not take long for many dogs to relax and follow that lead. Besides, if the visitor offers calm energy and attention, we have the perfect setup for an instant friendship.

So, Cactus may have met his aunt for the first time, but he acted like family from the start.
